Introduction to Housing Estates in Cheras
The definiton of a housing estate is a little loose. A housing estate may be a residential
development, planned, organised, and built by a developer. But it may also be an old plantation or
estate that has become a neighbourhood. Housing estates are usually referred to as "taman" in
Malaysia. Technically, the word "taman" means "park" but in practice it is translated as
'housing estate', 'township', 'town', 'subdivision', 'community', or simply 'neighbourhood'.
Often, an area is referred to
as a taman as well as bukit (hill) or kampung (village) or even bandar (town).
