Some believe that the word Struisbaai, means Straw Bay, which refers to the thatch roofs of the fisherman's cottages. In the 1940's, Struisbaai used to be a primitive camping area where people came to make merry under the Milkwood trees, to swim in the sea and fish from the rocks.
