Situated in the Overberg, lies the Cape's best kept secret, known as Struisbaai. This picturesque coastal village was established in the 19th century and boasts the longest white coastline in the Southern Hemisphere. The name Struisbaai has been in use since 1673, and derives from the Afrikaans word for ostrich. Some believe that the word Struisbaai, means Straw Bay, which refers to the thatch roofs of the fisherman's cottages. The fishing community, whose members lived for many years at Hotagerklip, gradually became part of the town of Struisbaai. In the 1940's, Struisbaai used to be a primitive camping area where people came to make merry under the Milkwood trees, to swim in the sea and fish from the rocks. With the arrival of running water, a motel and rondavels, development attained momentum, especially after Struisbaai had been declared a town. Struisbaai property consists of four thousand plots and homes that have views of the mountain, the bay and surrounding Cape Floral Kingdom. The various houses for sale in Struisbaai usually display a charming, authentic appeal but with the area increasing in popularity, more modern homes have sprung up. The area offers Ocean View Heights where a variety of homes are nestled against a mountain, with a lovely view of the ocean, and the Agulhas Nature Reserve, where stone cottages are situated amongst nature, enjoying the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the reserve.
This fisherman's village offers many attractions such as the picturesque harbour, the longest stretch of beach where you may enjoy one of the best fishing and water sport spots, the migration of the southern right whale herds that pass this beautiful coastline to mate and calve, the two national monuments namely, the Anglican Church that has been restored, and the Hotagterklip cottages, which are featured in many paintings by South African artists.
The Struisbaai region offers popular events such as the Yellowtail Festival where singers perform, Hazenvlakte Music Festival and the annual Marlin, Five Species Angling competition. There are also tourist attractions such as the southern most tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, the ruins of ancient Khoisan fish traps, the historic lighthouse which has been operational since 1849, and the Agulhas Nature reserve that covers over 16000 hectares of land, which offers 4x4 and hiking trails. Struisbaai is also situated near villages and towns such as Bredasdorp-the first town that was established in South Africa, Elim which holds the annual flower festival and Arniston, that was named after a shipwreck that fell victim to the Agulhas coastline, which is also known as the graveyard of ships.
This charming fisherman's village and best kept secret of the Cape, is ideal to find your real estate property.
